Examples of how we can deal with our feelings

We've given some examples here of healthy ways in which individuals can deal with the emotions that may arise from difficult situations in their lives. Being able to do this is a real life-skill that can help people to avoid the trap of abusing alcohol or drugs to 'blot out' uncomfortable feelings - with all the risks which that brings.

Just click on the links to the left to see the examples.

See if you can imagine some of the feelings that arise in the situations described. Perhaps anger, or fear, or loneliness. Think about how you could deal with them appropriately - so they don't end up damaging you - or people around you.

If you can't identify exactly with the situations we describe here, perhaps you can take a bit of time and make up some examples of your own that are more suited to you. Work out how you could respond to a situation and how you could deal with your feelings.
