Residential Treatment

Residential Treatment offers intensive initial addiction therapy (Primary Care) over a period of weeks. Some individuals - particularly those with little or no family or social support network - may require extended therapy (Secondary Care) that may last for several months.

Residential Treatment has some advantages over Day Care Treatment, although it may not be suitable for everyone. For example, those who are responsible for caring for young children may be better suited to attendance at a Day Care Treatment Programme. Residential Treatment can also be expensive, although some financial help is often available for those in need.

For those who do attend, Residential Treatment offers a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment where individuals can confront their own chemical dependency and associated issues, with the help of qualified staff.

Therapy usually consists of a mixture of group counselling, individual counselling and an introduction to the principles of a 12 - Step recovery programme, as followed by members of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

For those who live within the U.K., we've compiled a list of some U.K. Residential Treatment Centres, where you will be able to get further information.

We can't give details here of all Residential Treatment Centres around the world. If you live outside of the U.K., you'll need to check out your local Advice Centre or Doctor to find out what residential addiction treatment facilities are available in your area. However, we do know of a few treatment centres outside of the UK that we are able to recommend. Click here to see them.
